Complementary modules

The complementary modules offer an outlet to specialize in a particular research methodology. Two of the following specializations must be chosen as complementary modules.

Qualitative methods

Chair 07

Students are immersed in the research process: from developing a research question to writing a research report, including a discussion of limitations.

  • Teaches advanced knowledge and skills in qualitative social research.
  • After a lecture course on methodological and epistemological foundations, selected qualitative methods of data collection and analysis are taught in a practical manner within the framework of teaching research projects.

Quantitative methods

Students gain comprehensive qualifications in the applied description and explanation of inequality patterns using quantitative data, particularly in combination with the core module "Quantitative inequality research".

  • Provides a systematic introduction at an advanced level to the most important methods of quantitative social research.
  • Advanced methods of regression analysis and causal analysis (e.g., third variable controls, matching procedures) are taught and practiced using statistical software.

All chairs

Instead of specializing in a particular methodology, students are taught a broad range of theoretical and contextual knowledge.

  • Courses are selected from the two other specializations that were not chosen as the core module.
  • A comparatively large degree of freedom of course choice with a less systematic structure.
